Choose North Carolina or the conditional Virginia route

For Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, choose between a clerk-certified county court search, a noncertified courthouse search and a fingerprint-based personal history request. They are different products. Ask the requesting organization for the required geographic scope and certification before paying. This guide also includes a bounded Mecklenburg County, Virginia Circuit Court contact below; North Carolina forms and prices do not apply there.

Request the $25 single-county certified search

The North Carolina Clerk of Superior Court can provide a certified criminal-record name search for yourself or someone else in one county. Complete and print AOC-CR-314 and submit it with $25. Mail payment must be a money order or certified check, not a personal check. In person, the judiciary lists credit card, cash, money order or certified check. This certification does not extend the search to all North Carolina counties.

Mecklenburg’s courthouse is at 832 East Fourth Street, Charlotte, NC 28202. The mailing address is Mecklenburg County Courthouse, PO Box 37971, Charlotte, NC 28237-7971. The clerk is open Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.; the main number is 704-686-0400. Identify the request as a certified criminal-record search, complete the form’s identifying fields, and confirm return delivery and current turnaround with the clerk before relying on a deadline.

Use the courthouse for a noncertified background search

Public-access computers at any North Carolina courthouse allow free searching, viewing or emailing of county or statewide criminal court records; printing can cost extra. The result is not certified. The judiciary specifically directs background-check users to the county clerk’s office rather than Portal, although Portal can locate case information and documents.

For a specific criminal file, search by defendant name or case number and retain the filing county and final disposition. Paper files belong with the clerk in the county where the case is located; police reports belong with the involved law-enforcement agency. An arrest entry, a pending charge and a final judgment describe different stages.

For Mecklenburg documents filed before October 9, 2023 that cannot be found in Portal, the courthouse page supplies a Criminal files email link. Include the type of record, party names and file number if known. Use that linked division contact rather than guessing an address; this is a document-copy fallback, not a replacement for the certified-search application.

Prepare for the Sheriff’s fingerprint service

  • For electronic submission to the SBI, obtain the Electronic Submission form from the agency requesting your fingerprints. The Sheriff says it cannot provide that service without the forms.
  • Budget $10 for fingerprint collection. Online payment adds a separate transaction fee whose amount is not stated on the introductory page; in-person cash avoids that service fee.
  • The location is 700 E. 4th Street, Suite 120, Charlotte, NC 28202. For intake questions, call 704-336-3665.

The service page mentions both choosing an appointment and first-come service, and says fingerprint customers are no longer accepted after 4:30 p.m. It also describes an online application requirement alongside an in-person cash option. Confirm the current arrangement before travelling. Its 15–20 minute appointment estimate is not a background-report processing time.

Get your own statewide record when that is the goal

The SBI’s Right to Review is a North Carolina-only fingerprint-based personal-record check costing $14. Its Personal Review page links the request instructions in English and Spanish. The judiciary describes this statewide response as noncertified. Fingerprint collection and the SBI request are separate steps and fees; a $10 Sheriff appointment alone does not purchase or deliver this history.

Use personal review to check completeness and accuracy. If a court outcome is missing or a same-name record looks wrong, retain the case identifiers and the court’s disposition and follow the SBI review instructions. Ask the recipient before substituting a personal-review response for an employment or licensing submission with its own agency instructions.

If the case is in Mecklenburg County, Virginia

For a known Virginia Circuit Court file, contact Mecklenburg Circuit Court at 434-738-6191 extension 4214. Its street address is 393 Washington Street, Boydton, VA 23917; mail goes to PO Box 530, Boydton, VA 23917-0530. The directory lists clerk hours of 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m. Provide the case number and requested document, then ask about public access, certification, fees and delivery for that file.

This contact identifies the Virginia Circuit Court custodian. It does not establish a Virginia statewide background-check product or unrestricted access to every case. If the requesting organization means another court or a statewide repository, obtain those instructions instead of applying the North Carolina county-search procedure.

Check identity and the final outcome

Retain the issuer, search date, spelling used and counties covered with the result. A one-county search cannot clear nationwide history, and a fingerprint receipt does not show that no court case exists. For a consequential use, resolve an ambiguous name with the clerk and obtain the actual judgment or dismissal needed by the recipient. None of the reviewed local pages promises one universal completion time for all these services.
